Curriculum

Classical Ballet: (Must be in grade 1 & up to register - Full Term, One Recital Costume) Ballet is the foundation of all forms of dance combining grace, flexibility, and strength. The school offers a complete classical ballet program beginning at grade one and progressing to pointe, variations, and partnering for advanced and professional dancers. We are the official school of the Maine State Ballet Company.

Tap Technique: (Must be in grade 3 & up to register - Full Term, One Recital Costume) All levels of tap classes for students grade 3 through adult, beginner through advanced are offered. These consist of a full hour of tap technique, incorporating style, upper body, rhythm, precision work, and line work.

Jazz Technique: (Must be in grade 3 & up to register - Full Term, One Recital Costume) Jazz classes are offered for every level of student grade 3 through adult. A fast paced and contemporary rhythms make this course appealing for any age group. Emphasis is on Broadway show style.

Tap/Jazz Combination: (must be in grades 1 or 2 to register - Full Term, One Recital Costume) The one hour class consists of ˝ hour of tap and ˝ hour of jazz each week. Basic technique in both disciplines is taught.

Music and Movement: (Must be age 3 by Oct 15th to register - Eight Week Sessions - No recital) An active class for three year olds, involving games, songs, rhythm, music, and fun. An introduction to dance and creative movement for the very young dance enthusiast. The course runs for eight weeks with new sessions starting throughout the school year.

Four Year Old First Steps: (Must be age 4 by Oct 15th to register - Full Term, One Recital Costume) Pre-K students enjoy this exposure to dance fundamentals, rhythm exercises and games. Basic ballet technique is introduced. Students in this class are invited to be “Reindeer” in MSB’s production of The Nutcracker, most of them making their stage debuts.

Kindergarten Dance: (Must be in kindergarten to register - Full Term, One Recital Costume) The hour class consists of 1/2 hour of tap and 1/2 hour of ballet each week. Basic technique in both disciplines is introduced.

Adult Classes: Ballet, tap, jazz and ballroom classes are offered for adult students. Ballroom sessions are eight weeks in length; ballroom sessions are for couples only. Ballet, jazz and tap classes are offered all year. Adult ballet and jazz are not in recital. Adult tap students may choose to be in recital and would then pay for a costume.
