Maine State Ballet Company Auditions

We appreciate your interest in our company. Maine State Ballet is a small, respected regional ballet company whose mission is to bring joy to the Maine community through inspiring dance education and performance.

What to know before sending audition materials:

  • Most of our company members are older high school through university-age dancers who have trained at our school. They live at home and rely on family support or part-time work to cover living expenses (which are high in Maine). Some are also hired to teach dance with us to supplement their income.

  • Our current pay structure evolved from the intent to pay graduating high school company members choosing to remain with us to continue dancing while attending local universities or to work.

  • We have the following ranks: Apprentice, Artist, Corps de Ballet, Soloist, and Principal.

  • We do not offer traditional contracts, per se. Adult company members, depending on their rank, receive a total of between $2,400 and $3,900/annually (dancers are paid per performance - about 30 performances/year including a summer ballet).

  • Ballet classes are free for adult company members.

  • We do not have a "Trainee Program."

  • There is no additional pointe shoe reimbursement at this time.

  • We do not help provide housing or accommodations.

  • We DO have a large repertoire of traditional and Balanchine-style ballets which we perform year-round, a lot of performing opportunities at our own in-house theater, Portand's Merrill Auditorium, and Westbrook Performing Arts Center, as well as a great company culture.

  • We are open to considering ballet dancers from around the country, especially those who have been trained in the Balanchine-style and, upon receiving an invitation from us, travel here in person to audition. If you have not been trained in the Balanchine-style you must be willing and open to adapt to our style here in order to be considered. Attending in person gives you the opportunity to take a ballet class or two, experience our company environment, tour the facility, meet other dancers, and have an in-person Q&A interview with senior staff.

If you understand our pay structure and the requirement to travel here for an in-person audition, and are still interested in sending audition materials for us to consider (resume and audition video), please contact us at at info@mainestateballet.org. Please state that you understand these requirements in your introduction.
